What is energy efficiency?

In this activity, students consider what is meant by ‘energy efficiency’ and how this applies in the context of a house to reduce energy consumption. Students interpret graphs taken from an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) and then brainstorm ideas about how energy loss could be reduced and why not all householders implement all of these actions.

Using functional mathematics, students consider why published facts and figures are not necessarily accurate and how mathematical insight should be used to probe data.

This resource is part of the Power House scheme of work, from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), in which students investigate the topical issue of the cost and efficient use of energy. It is supported by the video Power House.
