Primary Progression in Multiplication Videos

This suite of videos look at progression in multiplication across the primary school. They show:

Multiple representations of multiplication  and the Commutative Law for multiplication in KS1 lessons and grid multiplication as an interim step, moving onto a mre formal method in KS2.

Watching the videos can provide a useful way to support new teachers in assessing children's learning and showing progression. Try watching each video twice.

  1. Firstly watch the teacher- what are they doing to encourage reasoning and opportunities for assessment during the lesson? How do they use questioning to support this?
  2. Watch the video again, this time focus on one or two children- what can they do/do they understand? How do you know? What question might you ask them to gain more insight? What would be their next steps? (Use the NC objectives to help you, working collaboratively with a colleague will enrich the impact of this activity)
