Lottery

In this task, students are required to decide whether a lottery is a good way to raise money. Tickets with the numbers 1 to 6 printed on are sold for £1 each. Each player crosses two of the six numbers. At the end of the week, two numbers are chosen. Anyone who has crossed the same two numbers as the winning numbers receives £10. Students are required to work logically and systematically to list all the ways two numbers can be chosen and from this deduce whether it is likely the lottery will be a good money raiser. Teacher guidance includes concepts which may be discussed with students, examples of probing questions which may be useful and assumptions that students need to make when completing the task. The assessment guidance consists of a progression table detailing how students may improve in each of the key processes. The resource concludes with a number of examples of students' work, together with comments, probing questions and feedback. This resource was produced by the Bowland Charitable Trust.
