Security Camera

A shop owner is to install a security camera in his shop to help prevent shoplifting. Students analyse a plan of the shop, using loci and construction to identify which shoppers are not in view of the camera and calculate what percentage of the shop is not covered. The second part of the activity requires students to explore whether the camera can be relocated to a place which provides greater coverage. Students have to work systematically, communicate and justify their solution. Teacher guidance includes concepts which may be discussed with students, examples of probing questions which may be useful and assumptions that students need to make when completing the task. The assessment guidance consists of a progression table detailing how students may improve in each of the key processes. The resource concludes with a number of examples of students' work, together with comments, probing questions and feedback. This resource was produced by the Bowland Charitable Trust.
