Number Spirals
This activity requires students to generate sequences of integers from a set of given number spirals.
The first number spiral is on a square grid and has clear examples showing the rules for allowed sequences. Students are asked to generate sequences, explain patterns and find the nth term for each sequence. All are quadratic sequences so the second difference method is required.
The next two pages of the printable resource have number spirals based on other grid patterns. The sequences generated also lead to quadratic expressions for the nth term. Students are encouraged to pose their own questions relating to their findings and to prove their results using algebra.
The teachers' notes give clear explanation of the expressions and reasons for possible outcomes.
