Which Operation?

This activity begins with an example of how to get from a start number to a given finish number using given operations such as +5 or x3. Students are then presented with a set of structured problems involving them selecting ways of getting from a start number to a finish number using other given operations.

The level of challenge increases as students are asked to explain their solutions to the problems. The whole activity is suitable for either group or individual work. The resource includes blank diagrams which enable students to explore different possible solutions.

The teachers' notes include answers and suggestions about how the activity can be extended.

This resource is part of the Churchill Maths Activities collection.
