Multiplication and Division: Halving and Doubling

This series of interactive excel sheets explore multiplication and division by doubling and halving. Answers can be checked each time and new questions generated at the click of a button.

The first sheet displays an array of changeable images in a rectangle. Students have to choose which multiplication the diagram represents. Alternatively students can make the array given a certain multiplication.

The second sheet demonstrates the repeated addition method of multiplication using values up to the ten times tables.

In the third sheet students are given a multiplication and have to select two addition sums that will give the same answer.

In the fourth sheet nine doubling and halving statements are generated and students have to match them up with the solutions below. The next sheet repeats this process but uses multiplication and division signs.

The following two sheets encourage quick mental multiplication through a series of match-up questions. The first sheet looks at the 2, 5 and 10 times-tables. The next sheet asks more wordy questions.

The eighth sheet can display up to four beakers, up to seven colours and one to five rows of beads to share out. Students can share the beads out by talking them from the top row and placing them in the beakers.

The following sheets explore a series of questions in the form “how many 3s make 6?” with visual displays to demonstrate the correct answer.

In the eleventh sheet part of a division sum has been removed, students have to select the correct missing value. A visual representation of the problem can be revealed to aid students.

The final sheet contains twelve division questions to be matched with the correct answers displayed at the bottom of the screen.
