Understanding Animal Research: Exploring ethics and science
Understanding Animal Research is a not-for-profit organisation which seeks to explain the role of animals in scientific, medical and veterinary research. Our nation-wide schools program provides free in-school talks and workshops to help students understand (not necessarily agree with) why and how animals are used in research in the UK.
Aimed at key stages 3-5, our free school sessions explore the ethical, legal and practical considerations of using animals in scientific, medical and veterinary research. Sessions are presented by educators, researchers and animal technicians able to discuss their experiences working in STEM, how they safeguard animal welfare and how their lab animals are advancing our scientific knowledge.
A typical 50-60 minute session includes a 30-45 minute interactive presentation and 10-15 minutes for questions. We can arrange talks for a single class, arrange multiple sessions or present assemblies to whole year groups.
Students will gain a better understanding of:
-How scientists evaluate ethical questions
-The role of animals in the development of new medicines and treatments
-How laws and regulations protect animal welfare
Students will have the opportunity to:
-Meet STEM professionals
-Learn about STEM careers
-Ask questions about current research
