Sorting equations and identities

This resource looks at the concept of recognising the differences between equations and identities. Students substitute numbers into algebraic statements in order to test their validity. Common errors are highlighted that can occur when manipulating expressions.

Students work on an exercise that involves grouping statements as ‘sometimes true’, ‘always true’, or ‘never true’. There are opportunities to address more general algebraic misconceptions.

The lesson assumes students have some familiarity with manipulating expressions.

There are pre-lesson and post-lesson formative assessment tasks. Detailed teacher notes give suggestions on questioning and how to use the resources. Full solutions are given for each of the sections.
