Physics for non-specialists NW205

Summary

Are you teaching secondary school science and looking for a range of effective teaching strategies, particularly to help with your physics lesson plans? Need to pep up your Physics understanding? Worried about waves? Scared of space or rattled by radioactivity?

Then this two day course is for you!

Using stimulating practical activities, demonstrations, classroom activities and stories we will focus on the key principles needed to teach physics effectively along with the skills and strategies to uncover students' misconceptions and build better understanding.

The course aims to:

  • explore and refine understanding of key topics
  • develop skills and update teaching strategies
  • improve your subject knowledge and enhance your teaching
  • improving your confidence in teaching physics at KS3 and KS4

All resources used in the course will be available for teachers to use in their classrooms.

Outcomes

You will be able to:

  • increase your understanding of physics topics at 11-16
  • become more confident and competent in your teaching of physics at 11-16
  • develop an understanding of common student misconceptions and how these can be addressed
  • employ the effective use of scientific models relevant to the teaching of physics
  • use innovative and engaging approaches to learning to bring physics alive in the classroom

Throughout both days, we will look at concepts within forces, energy, electricity, waves and astronomy with respect to the KS3 and KS4 Programmes of Study. We will explore how to develop better links between the concepts in order to develop a 'narrative of science' and look at the progression in understanding required of these fundamental concepts from KS2 to KS4.
