This guide to disruptive technologies provides ideas and rationale for why disruptive technologies should be taught as part of the Design and Technology secondary and post-16 curriculum. It provides examples of disruptive technologies, discusses how they might be introduced in a classroom setting and supports in department discussion as to how disruptive technologies can be used to guide students towards future career opportunities linked to Design and Technology.

Little big futures Design and Technology
What is the Internet of Things (IoT) and how can it help firefighting in the future? These activities explore how design can improve the equipment that fire fighters use, improving safety for both the general public and the fire fighters themselves. The single-lesson one-hour activity requires no previous experience of the Internet of things and comes with the introductory material to explore the topic with the class. The extended five-hour activity supports students to explore prototyping their own product, using their own research of fire fighting equipment to develop Internet of Things design ideas and prototypes.

How the Tesla Model S is Made
This video introduces the manufacturing processes behind the Tesla Model S. It shows how robotic manufacturing lines work with human workers, walking through each manufacturing step with voice over from Tesla employees.
