Exploring Changes
This resource contains six activities that link to Everyday Materials – with a focus on exploring the changes materials can undergo. They are designed for use with mixed age groups classes of Year 1 and 2. Activities include:
- observing ice melt and exploring what happens to the particles when things melt.
- investigating how we can slow down or speed up how quickly ice melts.
- exploring puddles; children are encouraged to make their own puddles and observe what happens to them over time. This activity focuses on measuring puddle size whilst beginning to explore why and how puddles ‘dry up’.
- understanding the properties of wax, particularly as to why we use it in waterproofing, and using their understanding to create wax resist pictures.
- exploring heating through melting wax crayons – creating their own wacky wax crayons in a variety of shapes and colours!
These activities have been provided by Hamilton Trust as part of their mixed age group science lessons.
