The Mathematics of Satellite Design - Overview

These 17 resources use the context of satellite design to link in to areas of the mathematics curriculum.

The challenges enable students to take an active stance in the solving of mathematical problems. This is achieved through a variety of approaches; some of the challenges are very open, whilst for others there is a framework to guide work. There is a constant emphasis on students experiencing the type of decisions that engineers have to make when working on projects. Improving one aspect of a design can have a negative impact on another aspect. This is particularly true where the amount of physical space is at a premium, as it is in a satellite. The challenges have been designed to be accessible to students with no prior knowledge of engineering or space. All of the challenges bring together several areas of mathematics and require students to apply their knowledge in an engineering context.
