Session 2 - Binary Numbers

This session introduces you to converting denary or base 10 numbers to binary digits and back again. It consists of two files, a set of slides explaining how binary conversions work and a worksheet.

  1. Read the slides in Slides - Binary Digits about binary digits. Make sure you are clear on how the values for binary numbers work looking at the column values for each digit. The slides compare how this is done to how we use hundreds, tens and units in normal counting. The final slides explain how to convert from denary or base 10 numbers to binary. Then they explain how to go from binary digits and back again. Work through the examples to make sure you are clear on how it works.
  2. Open the worksheet, Workbook - Converting Numbers, and work through the questions on the two sheets. The first page converts from binary to denary and the second page from denary back to binary. Check your work, the answers are in the answer document.
  3. Open the slides for Binary Addition and read the rules on adding binary numbers together. Work through the worked example on the last slide.
  4. Open Workbook - Binary Addition and work through the 5 questions. Once complete check your answers. Use the answers sheet to check them.
