Comparing the carbon footprint of transportation

This maths-based challenge explores sustainable travel, developing student understanding of the effects that some modes of transport have on the environment and ways of reducing it.

Students are asked to compare alternative methods of transport by calculating journey times and their carbon footprints.  The activity requires students to solve a contextual problem using division and multiplication.

Materials include teachers notes, presentations and a student handout.

This is one of a series of resources designed by the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) in conjunction with Network Rail to develop understanding and skills in key maths, science and engineering concepts.
