Plastic and Polymers - Chemistry in the Real World - RSC - STEM Conference RA298 / B79
Summary
Plastics and Polymers – Chemistry in the real World – RSC
The structure of some types of plastics are what makes them so resistant to degradation. When they break down, they do not disappear – they only get smaller. Programmes like Blue Planet II have made us consider our own personal use of plastics. Over the last 10 years, we have produced more plastic than during the whole of the last century, and a whopping 91% is not recycled!
Polymer chemistry relies on prior knowledge in key areas such as basic organic chemistry and bonding. This session explores the ways chemical scientists are working towards cleaner and greener materials. And delves into some novel plastic anecdotes to share with your students.
