Bench to Bedside

This resource looks at how drugs are developed in the lab and then the stages that have to happen before they can be used by doctors on patients.

The video, hosted by Amy and Ksenia who both work for Roche, introduces knowledge and activities covering 3 main areas.

  • The first part explains how bacteria cause disease, how bacterial infections can be treated and how some bacteria develop anti-biotic resistance.
  • The middle section of the video looks at the three main stages of drug development,; discovery phase, development phase, and commercialisation.
  • The final part looks at the different job roles in drug development at Roche and the various routes into these roles including apprenticeships and degrees.

In addition, the resource also contains a crossword for pupils to reinforce the key words introduced in the video and an activity where pupils analyse a model of how antibiotic resistant bacteria develop.
