Summary
This course series explores and exemplifies some of the key recommendations from the EEF's 'Improving secondary science' and 'Metacognition and self-regulated learning' guidance reports, as well as the 'Cognitive science approaches in the classroom' systematic review.
Aimed at KS3/4 science teachers, participants will develop an understanding of evidence informed approaches they can use back in the classroom to refine their practice.
Metacognition – Tuesday 22 November from 4-5pm
By the end of the session you will have a greater understanding of:
- What metacognition and self-regulation means
- Strategies to help pupils direct their own learning
- How to promote metacognitive talk in the classroom
Memory and cognitive science approaches – Tuesday 29 November from 4-5pm
By the end of this session you will have a greater understanding of:
- How to support pupils to retrieve and retain knowledge
- How to manage cognitive load
- Approaches to working with schemas
Identifying preconceptions and misconceptions, modelling, and feedback – Tuesday 6 December from 4-5pm
By the end of this session you will have a greater understanding of:
- How to identify and address pupil misconceptions
- Using models to support understanding
- Effective approaches to feedback
