During this two day residential, you'll explore the characteristics of being a successful leader of computing.


Summary

Whether you’re new to your leadership role, or looking to develop your prior experience, this course will build confidence and clarity allowing you to succeed. Written by experienced department leaders, and based in the most recent evidence of 'what works', you'll come away with an informed set of goals and the tools to make it happen.

Over this two day residential, you’ll complete the 'New subject leaders of secondary computing' course.

You'll participate in live face-to-face CPD at the National STEM Learning Centre in York. You'll take-away ready-to-use and successful teaching approaches from experienced teachers, supported by the latest research and evidence.

Residential information:

This is a residential course at the National STEM Learning Centre, York. Meals and overnight accommodation are included for participants for the duration of the course. 

If you wish to extend your stay in York, bed and breakfast will be available at the centre’s on-site accommodation at a discounted rate of £45+VAT per night. You can email reception@stem.org.uk to secure this rate, providing their course booking information and confirming the night(s) they would like to stay.

Who is it for?

New and aspiring curriculum leaders of computing in secondary schools, or those responsible for Key Stage 3 computing.

What topics are covered?

New subject leaders of secondary computing – you’ll get to grips with the different aspects of your role as a leader; you’ll develop a positive and viable vision for the computing department; how to develop the capability of the teaching team; building a successful curriculum; the impact on students, including how to successfully use data; and finally, explore the differences between leadership and management.

How will you learn?

Hands-on experiential learning with the collaborative support of your peers. You’ll receive expert advice and instruction from experienced classroom practitioners.

How long is this course?

This residential is two days in duration, you’ll complete approx. 12 hours of CPD.

Outcomes

By the end of this CPD package you will:

  • Improve their understanding of the role of a computing subject leader
  • Adopt evidence-based practise to improve effectiveness and manage workload
  • Develop a vision and lead the development of the department, confidently engaging with school leaders and inspectors 
  • Understand the capability of the teaching team and how to help individual teachers to develop, utilising a range of support
  • Be confident in establishing the curriculum intent and monitoring its implementation and impact
