A workshop for WAU coordinators to enhance confidence and experience of embedding science practicals within World Around Us thematic units.


Summary

On day 1, participants will rotate around more than 10 practicals and work with other coordinators and PGCE students to propose ways to embed the practicals into WAU thematic units. On day 2, participants will showcase one science lesson and how they disseminated good practice with other WAU coordinators.

What topics are covered?

Corrosion, materials, ratio, UV light, senses, separation techniques, density, pH, sustainable energy.

Outcomes

  • To provide WAU coordinators an opportunity to: Experience first-hand, 12 practicals from the Royal Society of Chemistry’s “Steps into Science” website (day 1).
  • Work with other coordinators and PGCE students to plan ways to embed the practicals into their schools' thematic units (day 1).
  • Independently apply one practical to their own teaching and learning, evaluate and reflect (gap task).
  • Share the practical, their evaluation and reflection with other WAU coordinators from local schools (gap task).
  • Share all of the good practice (the science practical and details of the dissemination event) on day 2 with the other workshop participants, facilitators and external stakeholders (day 2).
  • Hear from participants from last year's workshop.
