Small Scale Science NY343

Explore ways of using cheap and simple equipment to teach practical science in secondary schools for teachers and technicians.

Summary

Practical work is a crucial and motivating aspect of learning science in a secondary setting. In this course we will explore different ways of developing cheap and simple ways of doing practical work that meets secondary curriculum demands without breaking the budget!

Together, we will look at ways of using everyday versions of practical work in biology, chemistry and physics to reduce the effort, mess and equipment needed for common practical activities and demonstrations. We will also give you chance to have hands on experience of making simple equipment or using toys to develop scientific understanding. There will be a focus on common practicals that are used in schools and how we can improve student experience of these and reduce technician and teacher workload.
