Carom is an extra-curricular maths club which operates at Paston College in Norfolk. Jonny Griffiths has developed these materials to provide the opportunity for students to explore different aspects of mathematics which will also broaden their skills and encourage them to find new ways to approach a problem mathematically.

These resources are drawn from the field of pure mathematics and are designed for students, in the first year of the A Level course, as bridging activities between A Level and university. Each presentation includes tasks for students to investigate, enabling them to engage with the material and to play with the mathematics.

Geometry - Geodesics, Kites and Darts, The Overlapping Circles, Siders, Curves of Constant Width, Wallpaper Patterns, Hyperbolic Geometry

Algebra - Inequalities

Probability - Coincidences

Kites and Darts

Carom Maths provides this resource for teachers and students of A Level mathematics.

In this presentation students explore non-periodic tiling patterns using templates of kites and darts, as well as discovering the many remarkable facts to be found in these tilings.

The resource is designed to explore...

Perfect and Mersenne Numbers

Carom Maths provides this resource for teachers and students of A Level mathematics.

In this presentation the definition of a perfect number is explained and students are challenged to show that 496 is a perfect...

The Overlapping Circles

Carom Maths provides this resource for teachers and students of A Level mathematics.

In this activity the equations of the lines, which are formed at the points of intersection of three circles, are explored and an Autograph file is used to show what happens when the equations of the circles are added...

Repunits

Carom Maths provides this resource for teachers and students of A Level mathematics.

A repunit, which stands for repeated unit, is a number like 11, 111, or 1111 that contains only the digit 1 and extends to number bases other than base ten. This presentation challenges students to prove that any repunit...
