Year 2- Number and place value
This list consists of games, activities and interactive resources to support the the teaching of number at Year Two.
The resources cover objectives from the statuatory and non statuatory requirements of the Key Stage One programme of study for the new curriculum
Splat Square1-100
Use this interactive 100 square to select a number then count in tens, forwards or backwards. Children could take turns to choose the number to splat at the start.
Maths Chest 3 - Number: Pack 1
Topic 18 provides many activity ideas for ordering to 30, using < and > signs. One activity idea uses multilink to build concrete representations of numbers before writing out number statements using the < and > signs.
Other topics in this resource look at counting, grouping and ordering numbers and finding patterns within the number system.
Linked to the activities are repromasters and a workbook which contains photocopiable sheets with games, activities and assessment., which could be useful for further practise or homework.
Bead Numbers
Use on an interactive whiteboard to demonstrate place value. If you have abacus in class set children questions and show answers on the abacus. The resource generates questions where children show the value of 3-digit numbers by using beads the abacus.
Place the Penguins
A colourful, interactive game which helps children recognise the place value of each digit in 2 and 3 digit numbers. Use as whole class game or in individual group work. Can be played at two levels tens and units or hundreds, tens and units.
Teaching Place Value
This video shows an interesting method of introducing place value. Children visualise calculations as they create 'maths stories' by moving cups, or cards, between the resources and maths tables. A great way of moving children from concrete to abstract ideas when teaching place value and number work.
