Nuffield Secondary Mathematics: Topic Books

The Topic books in the Nuffield Secondary Mathematics scheme were number, space, time, measurement, logic and algebra, probability and statistics.

In each topic area, a carefully planned sequence of books enabled a precise match between the mathematics students learn and their attainment, allowing all students to experience progression and success. Entry tests were an essential part of the books as they helped the teacher to identify where each student should join the topic book ladder.

The teacher was expected to lead each child through the topic book, using the material in the order in which it was written. This was seen as important as points covered in earlier sections are built on in subsequent ones. It was essential that no section should be omitted and that a student who was absent should continue using the section which had been reached before the absence. The work was designed to be at such a level that the students are successful but learning at the same time.

The books were not designed for individualised learning; the teacher was required to introduce each section. It was intended that the teacher should work through the example at the beginning of the section orally with the students, making sure they understand what they were to do. The main point of the question was to be emphasised and any new words in the section explained if they were not understood. New mathematical words were printed at the bottom of the page.
