Worksheet 2: Sea Level and Salt Marshes
This resource explains what a salt marsh is and how they record sea-level changes. As salt marshes are zoned by tidal inundation, salt marsh plants and sediments can then record changes in sea level as the zones move horizontally in response to vertical changes in sea level.
In a practical experiment, students can explore the vertical accretion of salt marsh in response to sea level using modelling clay or similar. Using three colours to represent the tidal flat, marsh and trees, students build their own salt marsh ‘core’.
This resource was produced by the Geography Department at the University of Durham.
