Physics in Sport: Rowing

In this activity, students must hollow out a cucumber to use as a model rowing boat. By adding weights to the boat they can learn about buoyancy and upthrust. They add modelling clay rowers to the boats and can then compete to see if their rowing boat will make it across a large container of water without sinking. They could be asked to explain why boats can float even though the materials they are made from are often more dense than water. The video shows Ollie Bristowe, a second year undergraduate in Physics, at the University of Oxford. He is trialling to row for the Oxford University boat race. He describes how carbon fibre shells can make a difference to the speed of the boat in a race. This resource is provided by SEPnet.
