Sports Bag

In this Bowland assessment task, students are required to design a sports bag for a sports company. The bag is in the shape of a cylinder. Students draw the net of the bag from the given dimensions and consider how the three pieces of the bag, the main body of the bag and the two circular ends, should be cut from a roll of cloth. The students have to make connections between the dimensions of the different parts of the bag, vary how the parts be cut from the cloth in order to minimise waste and describe their solution effectively using words and diagrams. Teacher guidance includes concepts which may be discussed with students, examples of probing questions which may be useful and assumptions that students need to make when completing the task. The assessment guidance consists of a progression table detailing how students may improve in each of the key processes. The resource concludes with a number of examples of students' work, together with comments, probing questions and feedback.
