Food Miles

This activity, aimed at primary level, gives children the opportunity to discuss ways in which food miles and carbon footprint may be reduced. Linked to work on sustainability and improving the environment, children consider how far different types of food have travelled to get to the UK.

Children make a fruit salad and work out the total food miles the fruit has travelled, they then think about how this may be reduced by using an alternative fruit which can be sourced locally.

The resource also looks at other factors to consider when looking at damage to the environment. For example, growing tomatoes in a colder climate would require heated greenhouses which would, in turn, produce carbon dioxide.
