Sundials
In this activity, students explore how to use the sun to tell the time and employ a range of mathematical skills to understand the theory and to construct a sundial for themselves. The case study is contextualised through a video about sundials and an interview given by a gnomonist who explains how mathematics is essential to the construction of sundials. The mathematics students require to complete the tasks includes: the measuring of angles, reflection symmetry, nets, trigonometry, angles of latitude, the use of tables and charts and the conversion of imperial and metric units. There is the opportunity for students to work in groups, problem solve and use practical skills. There is also the opportunity for students to use dynamic geometry software to make a dial.
