Transformations

This resource consists of four interactive excel files dealing with single transformations of 2D shapes.

Transformation: Enlargement
This interactive program enables students to explore the enlargement of different shapes. The sheets deal with shapes shown on either a square grid or a coordinate grid. The centre of enlargement can be altered and positive and negative scale factors can be chosen. The file contains twelve printable worksheets of questions on enlargement and related topics which may be suitable for use within the classroom.

Transformation: Reflection
This interactive program illustrates reflections of a triangle which are shown on square grids with or without coordinate axes. The mirror line can be altered and the new image seen on screen. The file contains eight printable worksheets of questions which may be suitable for use within the classroom.

Transformation: Rotation
Students can use this interactive file to explore simple rotations. A triangle is rotated by 45⁰ or multiples of 90⁰ either clockwise or anticlockwise. The centre of rotation can be altered and the shapes can be shown on grids with or without coordinate axes. There are a further seven printable worksheets of questions which may be suitable for use within the classroom.

Transformation: Translation
The first sheet allows the student to see a shape translated by a vector, to see different shapes translated and to be able to alter the vector. The next two sheets deal with the addition and subtraction of vectors.
The final interactive sheet shows the position vectors of two points and the student needs to find the magnitude of the vector between the points and the direction as a bearing. Pythagoras Theorem and trigonometry would need to be used.

There are nine printable worksheets of questions which may be suitable for use within the classroom. These include questions on combinations of transformations.

Note
This program was designed by be viewed on a screen with a resolution of 1024 x 768. Users may have to adjust the resolution of their screen for the pages to display as was originally intended. The program uses macros which need to be enabled on users’ machine.
