Salty seeds
In this activity aimed at ages 9-10, children solve a problem faced by farmers in Mexico – ‘How to grow strong, healthy plants, that can survive and thrive in difficult conditions’.
They begin by finding out about Mexico, identifying geographical features and looking at some of the problems Mexican farmers face. They then design and carry out an investigation to see what effect soaking tomato seeds in salt water has on their germination and growth. Using what they have found out about the issues Mexican farmers face, they then are guided in a debate on whether Mexico should stop exporting food?
This resource has been produced as part of The Crunch, created by the Wellcome Trust to promote learning and discussions about our food, our health and our planet. By examining our relationships with food, and exploring cutting edge research, we can think about how we can eat in ways that can keep our planet and ourselves healthy.
