Learning outcomesThis activity is a chance for students to reinforce their learning in four key areas – inheritance, protein synthesis, heart structure and function, and ATP as an energy source. The activity is set in a novel context – the inherited condition hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Students do a jigsaw activity so that they can create an information sheet for medical students about the condition.

Students understand how the heart disease hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is caused by genetic mutations, and the impacts of these mutations on protein synthesis.

Students understand how the structure and function of the heart, and the use of ATP by the heart, are affected by HCM.
