Chance Factor
This activity uses every day scenarios, as well as the chance of inheriting a genetic disorder, as the context for practicing how to:
* calculate simple probabilities and express them in terms of fractions, decimals and words
* compare different probabilities with one another
* consider the probability of real events and scenarios.
The scenarios provided explore the idea of risk, and children can then vote on whether a risk is acceptable or unacceptable. The activity can be used in conjunction with the video Ashley’s Story by asking structured questions to draw out information about Ashley’s condition and what the chance of being born with it is.
This resource was produced by Genetic Disorders UK, which provides schools with a host of free resources for increasing awareness and understanding of genetic disorders.
