Bronze award: protection and prevention

This resource consists of three projects:

  • Research: mosquitos and disease

Students think about which diseases are spread by mosquitos, how they are spread, what can be done to control the spread, and what treatments are available for people who contract the diseases. Students research and gather information to persuade students, parents and staff to consider supporting research into the prevention and cure of diseases carried by mosquitos.

  • Practical: food poisoning

Students think about the symptoms of food poisoning, the microbes that cause it, and the best way to stop the spread of these microbes. Students devise a scientific demonstration to show how harmful microbes can spread in a kitchen.

  • Communication: protect yourself from malaria

Students think about how to protect themselves from illness when travelling abroad, why there is a choice of medicines for the same illness, and how useful insect repellents are. Students are asked to inform a group of voluntary workers about the choices of anti-malarial drugs and mosquito repellents, summarising the advantages and disadvantages of each, and other steps that can be taken, such as clothing to wear and mosquito netting.
