Fuel consumption: buying cars
This resource requires problem solving using skills to tackle a real-world problem that involves rates of change. In particular, it requires students to create, compare, and evaluate different representations of functions.
Students are given the average fuel consumption for three cars. Two people switch cars to ones with lower fuel consumption. They each want to save the same amount of fuel. The task is to calculate the fuel consumption of their new cars.
Examples of student work are provided to allow for peer assessment and highlighting common misconceptions. Each response takes a different approach to solving the problem. Students are asked to comment on the different methods and to finish solving the problem using each of them.
