Classifying equations of parallel and perpendicular lines

This resource develops the concept of exploring the relationship between the slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines. There is a particular focus on finding lines that are parallel and perpendicular by using their equations. The work extends into identifying and using intercepts.

Students are presented with ten equations of lines. The equations are presented in a variety of formats, some requiring rearrangement to put them in the form y = mx + c. An initial task is to find four lines that form four sides of a rectangle. Students then go on to look at lines drawn on a grid, they must draw in the axes and identify the lines. A final activity involves classifying lines using a range of properties.
