Historic bicycle
This task is designed to assess how well students understand calculating the circumference of a circle, working with imperial units.
The task features a ‘Penny Farthing’ bicycle with a big wheel of diameter 52 inches and a small wheel of diameter 18 inches.
Tasks comprise:
- Calculating the circumference of the big wheel
- Calculating how far the bicycle travels with one turn of the big wheel
- Calculating how many times each wheel turns when the bicycle travels for 1 mile
This task is from the Mathematics Assessment Resource Service, a collaboration between UC Berkeley and the Shell Centre team at the University of Nottingham. A full rubric is given for the task, together with examples of student work and suggestions for helping students overcome misconceptions. Further information on the collection is given here.
