Sampling and estimating how many jellybeans

This is a problem solving lesson, designed to help you assess how well students are able to:

  • Model a situation mathematically, justifying any assumptions made.
  • Estimate unknown values/missing information when solving a problem.
  • Calculate volumes of three-dimensional objects.
  • Use an appropriate sampling method to draw conclusions about a population.

The problem is set in the context of a game at a fair that involves guessing how many jellybeans there are in a jar. Students are given a picture of a jar, together with its dimensions. They must make suitable estimates of other quantities. The problem is to estimate the total number of jellybeans, and the number of black jellybeans.
