Energy Stores and Transfers

These diagnostic questions and response activities (contained in the zip file) support students in being able to:

  • Understand that when a force makes things change it mechanically transfers energy between different energy stores.

  • Understand that friction transfers energy mechanically into a heat store of energy.

  • Identify objects that have a store of energy

  • Identify the energy stores at the start and the end of an event

  • Explain how energy is almost always transferred to the heat store of the surroundings

  • Identify where energy is transferred by rubbing

  • Identify different ways that energy can be transferred

  • Identify actions that transfer energy

  • Use precise language to describe transfers of energy between energy stores

  • Represent energy transfers in events using Sankey diagrams

The resources include details of common misconceptions and a summary of the research upon which the resources are based.
