The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI): Maths lesson plans

The Institute of The Motor Industry (IMI) is the professional body for individuals working in the motor industry.

This collection contains a series of twelve mathematics lessons based on the motor industry. The resources include teacher notes and student materials for each lesson. The lessons cover:

  • Lesson 1 - New Car Sales
    Students are asked to create a presentation from a data sheet containing the number of new car sales in the UK one month.
  • Lesson 2 -  Buying a Car
    Students are given a range of financial information and asked to complete a cash-flow forecast when buying their first car.
  • Lesson 3 - Designing a Race Circuit
    Students are asked to develop plans and layout for a new track in the middle of England.
  • Lesson 4 - Car Emissions
    Students are asked to produce a short report to outlining the CO2 emissions, miles per gallon, car tax bracket cost for different car models. Internet access required.
  • Lesson 5 - F1 Lap Times
    In this resource students are given lap times for three F1 drivers and asked to plot the data on a graph of their choice.
  • Lesson 6 - Drag Racing
    Students are asked to design a drag racing car within a budget, selecting from a menu of parts of varying price and performance.
  • Lesson 7 - Motorcycle Trip
    Students have to answer a series of questions when planning a motorbiking holiday from Lands End to John O'Groats. What is the total mileage of the trip? How much fuel will you use? How much the whole trip will cost?
  • Lesson 8 - Paint Job
    In this lesson students have to use ratios and surface area calculations to find the amount of paint required when re-spraying a car.
  • Lesson 9 -  Heavy Vehicle
    This lesson contains two questions concerning the volume of a lorry trailer and the total weight of its cargo.
  • Lesson 10 - Off Road
    In this lesson students are invited to research how 4x4 cars perform when driving on steep terrain and to design a short test track that would test this.
  • Lesson 11 - Vehicle Parts
    Students are asked to perform percentage increase calculations when pricing items, perform currency conversions when selling items abroad and to calculate the cost of shipping items to the USA.
  • Lesson 12 - Topic: Statistics/Data analysis Context: Buying a Motorbike
    Students are given a range of more complicated financial information when buying a motorbike and and asked to complete a cash-flow forecast to calculate their bank balance at the end of each month
