Science Careers Days

Produced by the Learning Skills Improvement Service (LSIS), this case study tackles the theme of progression through STEM subjects and careers. It describes how a careers day was used to widen students' knowledge of available opportunities in STEM-related fields. City and Islington College felt that students attending interviews for science courses had a limited range of careers choices in mind, with an over-representation of medicine. It was felt that by providing early information, students would consider a wider range of careers, course choices and lead to an increased interest in STEM subjects. Early evaluation by students and teachers suggests that this has been successful in shifting preconceptions and perceptions.
