Introducing Curricular Targets and Reviewing Action Points Training Materials

Key Stage Three National Strategy training materials produced in 2002 written to help subject leaders to have a clear understanding of numerical targets including aspirational targets, translate this into specific curricular or teaching targets that will improve students’ knowledge and understanding, refine practice in relation to identifying and constructing action points and be clear about the sources of evidence that can be used to monitor and evaluate action points.

Components
*Session 1 - From numerical targets to curricular targets:
Exploring participants’ approach to numerical targets and identify whether they are setting aspirational targets for Key Stage Three. The session introduces curricular targets and requires participants to begin to construct their own.

*Session 2 - Reviewing action points:
Reviewing and refining action points. The session offers participants the chance to gain some additional practical experience in writing action points. The action point written in this session relates to the curricular target identified in Session 1.

*Session 3 - Monitoring, evaluation and next steps:
Participants identify the monitoring activities evident in their own or exemplar action points used in Session 2 and consider how the information collected via monitoring can be evaluated to provide feedback on progress with each action point. They reflect on the unit and identify the important points that need to be taken back to the science department. Follow-up tasks that build on the essential elements of this unit are outlined for participants.
