Sample Plans for Low Attainers

A set of sample plans from the National Strategies looking at number, algebra, geometry and measures.

Each sample plan identifies the required prior knowledge, suitable teaching approaches, list of resources and the expected learning outcomes. The resources to implement the lessons accompany the plans as word documents than can be printed onto card and manipulated by the students.

Number: This unit builds on work in place value, calculation and fractions, decimals and percentages and focuses attention on simple calculation skills in addition and subtraction, and practical exploration of the concepts of multiplication and division. Students will develop measurement in a range of contexts, generating their own ideas for measurement, moving to standard units, progressing to reading scales and solving more complex problems using measures and calculations in the final phase of the unit.

Algebra: This unit focuses attention on sequences of number. Students are encouraged to explore familiar sequences and generate their own. The second phase of the unit focuses on mathematical processes and supports pupils in articulating their strategies and reasoning. The final phase of the unit will enable pupils to consolidate their knowledge and understanding through investigative work.

Geometry and Measures:This plan focuses on turning, movement and classification of 2-D shapes. Students are encouraged to explore different methods of classifying and describing shapes, and also work in groups and pairs to develop their transformation skills. The final phase of the unit extends and develops thinking skills and problem solving using real-life contexts.
