The Future's Handheld

This Teachers TV shows the first trial of the use of specially adapted software on handheld devices in the classroom. The devices may be used for a prototype design and technology GCSE exam being developed for the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and Qualifications and Curriculum Agency (QCA) by Professor Richard Kimbell of Goldsmith's College, London.

In this programme Year Ten students at Saltash Community School, near Plymouth, spend two days using the devises before giving detailed feedback. The aim of the trial is to evaluate the effectiveness of the PDA as a tool to enhance student creativity and as an aid to assessment.

These interactive handheld computers have been specially customised for the classroom to enhance student learning and assessment. They are multi-functioned with a typing and drawing facility, take photographs and can voice record comments and ideas. The students can look at each other’s work, which is continuously beamed to the teacher's laptop for assessment and feedback.

The next stage is to be a 20 school pilot before submitting a final report to the DfES in January 2007.
