Motivating Maths at GCSE: Getting Away from the Textbook

This video resource from Teachers TV addresses the issue of motivating GCSE mathematics students, which has been identified as a national problem. Alison Clark-Wilson, from the Mathematics Centre at University College Chichester, and Ron Taylor, Mathematics Inspector and Advisor for Hampshire, discuss the restrictions of the curriculum at Key Stage Four and the exam pressure teachers encounter. A group of mathematics teachers from Hampshire draw up a list of the work habits they want to encourage in their students and discuss the need to exploit the more imaginative approaches they use at Key Stage Three, particularly avoiding the excessive use of textbooks.
