Demonstrating Chemistry: Top of the Flops
In this video, produced by Teachers TV, Dr Shini Somarathne presents a run-down of the top ten experiments that go wrong for teachers, compiled by school science support service CLEAPSS. Expert chemists Dr Colin Osborne from the Royal Society of Chemistry, and Dr Kay Stephenson and Bob Worley from CLEAPSS demonstrate what happens when experiments don't go according to plan. There are tips to make school science experiments a success and give some alternative approaches to classic experiments. They look at problems associated with: • reacting copper oxide and magnesium powder • cracking hydrocarbons • white phosphorus • mixing water and concentrated sulfuric acid • making iron sulfide • making magnesium oxide • making nylon polymer 'rope' • generating hydrogen • making chlorine gas • making copper sulphate crystals.
