Groups, Rings and Fields

The Midland Mathematical Experiment, in which a number of schools collaborated with the aim of developing a new approach to teaching mathematics in the Grammar School, developed a series of books to cover their ‘A’-level syllabus. Groups, Rings and Fields is split into sections, each section containing explanations, examples and exercises. Groups considers the properties of groups, closure, associativity, identity element and inverses giving a variety of examples of groups and different ways of defining a group. Homomorphisms and isomorphisms considers the structure of sets, automorphisms and conjugates, the kernel of a homomorphism and systems of equations. Rings and fields begins by defining number sets, defining the properties of a ring, subrings and fields. The book concludes with a section containing answers to the exercises.
