Matrices

From the Nuffield Foundation, the purpose of this module is to introduce the language associated with matrices, to illustrate their use and begin to develop the algebra associated with them.

The resource consists of:

*Overview of the content of the cards.

*Cards I.1 – I.3: language of matrices introduced by some simple and interesting games

*Cards II.1 – II.3: uses of matrices for storing results, information about businesses and information about networks

*Cards III.1 – III.3: use of a matrix (vector) to perform a translation, use of 2x2 matrices to effect simple transformations

*Cards IV.1 – IV.2: addition, multiplication and the general properties of matrices.

The 11 cards are organised into four sections. There are answers to the questions but, apart from a brief introductory description of the cards, no additional guidance for the teacher or rationale for the way the topic is developed.
