In at the Deep End

In this video from Teachers TV, a newly qualified design and technology teacher has been given responsibility for planning and delivering a new vocational GCSE in manufacturing, but today's Year Ten lesson is not going well.

Behaviour expert John Bayley observes that Bruce Duxbury's class management is excellent, but his lesson is inadequately planned. John is particularly struck by Bruce's lacklustre teaching style, which is surprising given his busy life outside school as a competition ballroom dancer. He encourages Bruce to put some of his performing skills into his teaching, to be clearer when giving instructions and explaining key concepts and to seek more pedagogical help from his head of department. Later in the week, Bruce teaches the same class again and tries out some new strategies.
