Primary INSET Maths: Organising and Planning In-service Training

This is a resource to aid primary mathematics co-ordinators when planning in-service training (INSET) sessions. Whilst some of the specific information is dated, the general ideas are still relevant and can be easily updated. As well as providing information there are also a number of activities for use in INSET sessions. The book is split into four sections. Preparing for INSET considers the role the INSET leader should take, the skills required to manage INSET meetings and how to build the programme. Current issues in mathematics looks at a wide range of issues, some of which need updating. Access to mathematics, the use of resources, the use of technology, classroom organisation, assessment and record-keeping, primary/secondary liaison, practical and investigative work are all covered using a number of activities. Mathematical activities looks at how mathematics can be linked to art, the environment and technology. Specific reference is made to teaching algebra and probability whilst mathematics across the curriculum and the role of parents are also considered. Taking stock and evaluating considers the role of evaluation within INSET sessions and reflecting on the INSET itself. The section looks at effective management, effective leadership and evaluating the course. This book was written by Lyndon Baker and Michelle Selinger.
